Meal Pic Privacy Policy

Meal Pic helps you track what you eat. This policy explains exactly what leaves your phone, who receives it, and how to get rid of it. It matches the privacy label on our App Store page — if the two ever disagree, tell us and we will fix it.
What we collect

We never ask for your precise location, and the app requests no location permission. We do not collect your contacts, your browsing history, or any advertising identifier.
Signing in
You can create your account four ways, and we only receive what that route sends:
- Sign in with Apple — Apple sends us your name and an email address. If you pick Hide My Email, the address we receive is Apple's private relay address, and we never see your real one.
- Google — Google sends us your name and email address. We never see your Google password.
- Email code — we send a one-time code to the address you enter, through Resend, our email provider.
- Phone code — we send a one-time code by text message to the number you enter, through Twilio. Standard message rates may apply.
That is the only identity information we hold. We never post on your behalf or read your contacts.
Apple Health
If you turn on Apple Health, Meal Pic writes the calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat from meals you log into Health, and reads back your dietary energy for the day. This stays between your device and Apple Health. We do not upload your Health records to our servers or send them to anyone. You can revoke access at any time in iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Meal Pic.
AI analysis of your food — what is sent, to whom, and your consent
Meal Pic estimates calories and macros with a third-party AI service. The app asks for your permission before the first request, on a screen that repeats everything in this section, and you can review or change that choice at any time under Profile → Privacy & Sources → AI Data Sharing. If you choose "Not Now", nothing is sent, and the photo, voice and AI-search features stay off until you allow it; the Food Database search still works, because it does not use an AI service.
What is sent. Only the content you are asking the app to analyze: the photo or video frames of a meal you scan, photos of nutrition labels, and food descriptions you type or speak (spoken food logs are converted to text on your device first). Nothing else is attached — not your name, email address, weight, goals, birthday, Apple Health data, or account ID.
Who receives it. OpenAI (OpenAI, L.L.C., United States) — the AI provider that analyzes the image or text. The request is routed through Meal Pic's own server, which forwards it and does not keep a copy of your photo. Food names identified in a scan, and barcodes you scan, are also looked up in nutrition databases: USDA FoodData Central, Open Food Facts, and Nutritionix. These receive only the food name or barcode.
How it is used. Solely to estimate the nutrition in that meal. Your photos and descriptions are not used to train AI models — we use OpenAI's API, whose terms exclude API data from training — and they are never shared for advertising or sold. OpenAI may retain API inputs for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring, per its API data-usage policy. Photos you keep on a logged meal are stored on your device (and, if cloud sync is on, in your account).
Same protection. Every provider above is bound by its own privacy terms to use the data only to provide the service to us: OpenAI API data usage, Nutritionix, Open Food Facts. USDA FoodData Central is a public U.S. government database.
Who else receives data
- Supabase — hosts your account and, if enabled, your synced logs.
- Google — only if you sign in with Google.
- Twilio — delivers the text-message code if you sign in with your phone number.
- Resend — delivers the email code if you sign in with your email address.
- OpenAI — analyzes scan photos, label photos and food descriptions, only after you allow it in the app (see above).
- USDA FoodData Central, Open Food Facts and Nutritionix — nutrition lookups by food name or barcode.
- Mixpanel — anonymous product analytics.
- Apple — handles all billing. We never see your payment details.
Crash reports. If the app crashes or freezes, iOS gives us a diagnostic report on the next launch (app version, iOS version, device model, and the code that was running). It is stored on our own servers, is not linked to your account, and is used only to fix the problem.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with data brokers or advertisers. Nothing in Meal Pic tracks you across other companies' apps or websites.
Your choices
- Delete any logged meal in the app at any time.
- Profile → Delete Account permanently deletes your account and every row of your data from our servers. This cannot be undone.
- Profile → Reset All Data clears everything stored on the device.
- Profile → Privacy & Sources → AI Data Sharing to review or withdraw your consent to AI analysis.
- Turn off Apple Health access in iOS Settings.
- Email us and we will delete your data on request.
Children
Meal Pic is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will delete it.
Changes
If our data practices change, we will update this page and the App Store privacy label before the change ships.
